I'm really not sure. I love volunteer work and do a fair amount of it. But I'm not sure what I am super passionate aside from feeling satisfaction and gratitude from being of service. I enjoy volunteer work that allows me to connect with people one-on-one. When I volunteer at Dress a Child for example, I love to shop with the children. But I also really love talking to the parents and volunteers and hearing their stories and personal journeys. I have had some neat experiences connecting with parents who have shared with me their struggles and triumphs and the help they have received from the community. That is very inspiring and humbling.
At another event, a woman started talking to me about her struggles with divorce and hear fear of losing her children and keeping a job and holding everything together. She was crying and I didn't know what to do except hug her. And then I felt prompted to ask if she would like me to pray with her. So we prayed right there in the middle of the parking lot. I felt honored that she would allow me to mourn with her and pray for her.
I also really loved my time at the women's shelter, talking to women that were recovering from drug abuse or physical abuse from a relationship. Again, it is a special thing to be a whiteness to someone's sacred experiences and their journey out of horrific trials. The women at the shelter follow a bible based program and it is really neat to talk with others about Christ and His atonement and how we can be healed through Him.
I tend to align well with organizations and programs that focus on self reliance and ending the generational cycle of issues such as drug abuse or homelessness.
I’m not as driven in my career as I would be if we didn’t have kids- so I could definitely have more passion, but at the end of the day, I truly do care about bringing awareness to swallowing and communicative disorders. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and educating others in these areas.
